Eva-Fiore Kovacovsky is a Swiss/Slovak artist and researcher based in Berlin. Her work centers on how energy is transferred in ecosystems. For example, she attempts to make the biological process of photosynthesis — how plants convert light into sugar — visible and tangible through photographic means and experimental formats. Visitors to her installations often experience sensory interactions, such as tasting a sorbet made from beech leaves while exploring her photographic works on the developmental process of spring.
In Kovacovsky’s practice, plants are both a medium and a collaborative partner, reflecting humans’ interconnectedness with other living beings. Light captures the contours, shadows, and textures of plants or the feeding traces of organisms on light-sensitive image carriers. The works are created in the darkroom, outside at night in the countryside, or during the day in direct sunlight. She has worked extensively with cyanotype prints, in both large formats and exhibitions indoors and outdoors. When exhibiting her work, she consciously incorporates the surroundings into her work.
Her artist book Feeding on Light was published by Roma Publications (NL) in the fall of 2023. Since 2017, she has run Between Us and Nature – A Reading Club together with Sina Ribak, in collaboration with Zabriskie Buchladen fĂĽr Kultur und Natur in Berlin.Â
She has shown solo i.e. at Kunstfort Vijfhuizen / NL and Aargauer Kunsthaus / CH and group exhibitions i.e. Bärenzwinger / DE, Colomboscope / LK, C/O Berlin / DE, Kunsthall Stavanger / NO, Arsenale Novissimo, Venice / IT, and Kunsthalle Basel / CH. Kovacovsky has a B.F.A. from the Rietveld Academie / NL. She has i.e. guest lectured at Hochschule für Design Karlsruhe / DE, Rietveld Academie / NL, KASK / BE and KaE Stipendium-HKU / NL. In 2024 she attended the Goldrausch KünstlerInnenprojekt in Berlin. From September 2024 she will conduct the two year research project Photosynthetic Cookbook within the Art & Ecology research group at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerpen. Kovacovsky is represented by STAMPA Galerie, Basel and bradwolff & partners, Amsterdam.

Eva-Fiore Kovacovsky

Eva-Fiore Kovacovsky is an artist based in Berlin. She grew up in the hills of Emmental in Switzerland surrounded by nature with the forest and its inhabitants as her kin. She remembers tasting the seasons by eating the fresh green shoots of leaves in spring, and the smell of the mushrooms in fall. This deep connection and the different tastes of various plants have become a central theme within her work. Using cultural, scientific and personal stories she works with plant specimens experimenting with analogue photography. Her artist book Feeding on Light was published by Roma Publications / NL in the fall of 2023. Since 2017 she runs Between Us and Nature – A Reading Club together with Sina Ribak in collaboration with Zabriskie Buchladen für Kultur und Natur in Berlin.
