#41 Between Us and Nature – A Reading Club

How does an ant perceive the smell of compost? This could be one of the more-than-human stories gathered in “The Book of the Ten Thousand Things” created for documenta15 by La Intermundial Holobiente. “Inbetweenery” is the proposal by artist Claudia Fontes, philosopher Paula Fleisner, and writer Pablo M. Ruiz to translate “intermundial” into English. 

The book has been “written by other-than-human entities” and has been “collectively put together in Argentina with the help of human poets, writers, and artists with diverse cosmovisions, working together in a non-extractivist and non-representational manner.”1

 

“The Book of The Ten Thousand Things” is not finished. At the compost heap, a ruderal area of the Karlsaue Park in Kassel surrounded by living matter, visitors can pick among the loose pages, to read, to imagine and to participate in a multispecies world and book making.

 
Meeting the collective and discovering the strong connection led to the idea of collaboration. And so it happened that one of the 100 copies of the book has been entrusted to Eva and is currently dwelling in Berlin. In the evening of August 10, we will gather to collectively read in the “The Book of The Ten Thousand Things” co-creating relations and practising intertwinement. 

For the rest of the month of August, anyone is invited to leaf through this example, to share companionship with its characters, and to contribute to it. This can happen individually anytime during opening hours of Zabriskie Buchladen für Kultur und Natur. 
Between Us and Nature is an ongoing reading club that chooses texts related to natural sciences, art, anthropology, postcolonialism and the (post)anthropocene from a female perspective. Attendees read passages together out loud, and share experiences and thoughts about the nature they live in. Looking beyond disciplines, the group creates a space to learn from and with bacteria, algae, fungi, soil and multinaturalist narratives.

NOTE the TIME: We start at 18:30 CEST. We have 2 hours of reading together.
