Light Layers brings together the three artists Eva-Fiore Kovacovsky, Stefanie Seufert and Luca Caciagli.

The artists return to the elemental chemistry of photography—working hands-on to create unique images that reveal a direct relationship between the subject and the image itself. As a response to the dematerialisation of images in the digital environment and the endless reproduction of virtual pictures, these works reassert photography’s tangible connection to the world through touch, surface, and material presence. The medium is deconstructed and reimagined, giving rise to new meanings and perspectives. Through tactile and process-based approaches, Kovacovsky, Seufert, and Caciagli explore photography’s materiality and its relationship to light, touch, and sensory experience. The photograph becomes not a window onto reality, but a physical object—one that embodies interaction, transformation, and the invisible dynamics of its making. By embracing the unpredictability of light-sensitive materials, the works investigate the boundaries between visibility and invisibility, art and science. Photographic paper and film act as recording devices beyond the mere capture of light—they register traces of time, matter, and imagination. In revisiting techniques on the verge of obsolescence, the artists connect the origins and possible futures of the medium. Their works explore photography as a field of experimentation shaped by light, chemistry, and chance—an ongoing interplay between perception and material transformation.

Eva-Fiore Kovacovsky

The transmission of energy within ecosystems is central to Eva-Fiore Kovacovsky’s work. She renders photosynthesis—the conversion of light into sugar—visible and tangible through photographic and experimental processes. In one such gesture, she serves visitors a sorbet made from beech leaves as they move through her photographic works. Working in the darkroom, in direct sunlight, or at night using flashlights, she records the contours, shadows, and textures of plants, as well as the feeding traces of organisms, on photosensitive surfaces.

Luca Caciagli

The series „Astro reach Beyond the Stars“ by Luca Caciagli draws on visual languages associated with scientific imaging, evoking structures reminiscent of cellular formations, chemical reactions, and astronomical observations. By foregrounding chance and material interaction, Caciagli’s work parallels scientific inquiry, where observation and unpredictability coexist. The images function as experimental fields in which light and matter generate forms that reflect the complexity and variability inherent in natural systems.

Stefanie Seufert
Stefanie Seufert investigates the conditions and potential of photography within both contemporary and historical contexts. In order to question photography as a means of fixation and a tool of absoluteness, she explores experimental methods of the flexible image creation process. Double and multiple exposures, folding and cutting, chance and decay (bleaching) expand the field to painting, sculpture, and performance. Serial and repetitive processes give rise to a system of ambiguity and radical subjectivity that reveals vulnerability in the sensitive surfaces of the material. This visual language is fragile, fragmented, and contradictory.
